Social Trends: Girl on Girl Action

Fake bisexualism is about to be coined as the next term in social trends. The summer hit song, “I kissed a girl” by Katy Perry is a first example of today’s young females’ need to ‘explore’ same-sex relations, if only for popularity purposes.
More and more ‘girls-kissing-girls’ sightings have been popping up amongst the youth nightlife in the US. According to the magazine Marie Claire, young female bisexuality is “the erotic new trend (everyone’s trying it)” and a survey conducted in 2005 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed “while 1.3 percent of women identified themselves as homosexual, 11.5 percent of women ages 18 to 44 — and about 14 percent of women in their late teens and early 20s — report at least one sexual encounter with another woman…. Only about 4 percent of women, ages 18 to 59, reported such an encounter in a similar survey in 1992.”
The causes? To start with, there was the famous Britney-Madonna tongue clash which made bisexuality seem so, like, totally cool. And we mustn’t forget the ‘Girls Gone Wild’ DVDs that portray drunken female college girls getting it on. Also, another major reason is the fact that girls today want to get the attention of boys their age. These boys have grown up on girl-on-girl porn, and their sexual cues have been affected by it. “Girls making out with each other to turn on guys is the latest craze at high school and college parties,” according to the online magazine Salon.com. This satisfies male onlookers and projects to them that the girl is “sexually open and adventurous.”
Not only is there nothing wrong with exploring one’s sexuality-it’s actually healthy and good for self-discovery and growth. But today’s female youth need to learn that sexual exploration should be done to satisfy only your own needs. Kissing another girl in order to get attention and attract a bunch of slobbering college boys is just not a good enough reason. Attention schools and parents: start revising your sex-ed curriculum.
