Panama Hats Hype in Italy
by: Taly Weiss August 28, 2008![]()
When President Theodore Roosevelt arrived at the Panama Canal inauguration in 1906 handsomely clad in a “refined Homburg made of fine straw”-he had no idea what an impact his casual fashion statement would make. The new look immediately brought on a series of postcards and photographs that quickly circulated the globe. And ever since its first presidential debut the hat, which was made in Ecuador, was coined the ‘Panama Hat’.

Today, the Panama trend lives on. Its hype in Italy was started by no other than Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who looks just as smooth as I imagine Roosevelt did. Surely, after its leadership appearance along with its sex appeal and elegance, the Panama will be spotted in many more fashionable cities of the globe. Hats off to you, Teddy & Silvio.
